Shark attack leaves woman critically injured amid series of encounters in Australia
SYDNEY, Australia - A woman was left in critical condition after she was bitten by a shark at a beach in Sydney, Australia, and it's not the first, or even second, time it's happened this month.
Local authorities said the woman was attacked while swimming close to shore at Sydney's Coogee Beach on Saturday within the flagged area — an indication that an area is safe to swim in.
The shark is believed to be a 3 to 4 meter shark, or between 9 and 13 feet long, according to officials.

"Council lifeguards stationed at Coogee Beach responded immediately, administering emergency first aid and CPR before paramedics arrived," Randwick City Council said in a Facebook post.
Bystanders pulled the 30-year-old from the water, and she suffered serious injuries to her arm and leg, according to FOX News Digital.
The woman that was bitten left the beach breathing, but in critical condition and was airlifted to a local hospital, authorities said.
Video from Shawn Buttling via Storyful shows the emergency response at the beach. All eastern suburban beaches will be closed for at least 48 hours following the attack, according to the council.
"It has been a very shocking incident, and I acknowledge that there will be lots of people across our community who are feeling very shaken up right now. What we can say is that all Randwick County beaches are closed until further notice, and we will reopen when it is safe to do so," Mayor Dylan Parker said on Facebook.

The incident comes amid a recent string of deadly shark attacks in Australia. Last week, officials said a 35-year-old fisherman was killed by a suspected shark measuring approximately 15 feet long off the coast of Western Australia.
The man was spearheading near Michaelmas Island, a protected sand cay, which is a low sandy island found on the surface of coral reefs.
On May 24, a 39-year-old was killed following a suspected bull shark attack while spearheading along the Great Barrier Reef, FOX News Digital reported.
And just days earlier, on May 16, a 38-year-old was killed after being bitten by a great white shark near Rottnest Island, which is a popular tourist destination.
A 12-year-old also died following a shark attack in Sydney Harbour earlier this year, authorities said.

Dozens of beaches on the Australian coastline were also closed in January after four shark attacks were reported in a two-day period.
Authorities told FOX News Digital that heavy rain had created murky water conditions that may have attracted sharks while reducing visibility.
There have been 27 shark attack bites reported in the world so far this year, seven of which were deadly, according to trackingsharks.com. Nine of those shark attacks happened in Australia — four of which were deadly and three provoked.
Australia averages only 20 shark attacks each year, according to the Australia Institute of Health and Welfare.

To reduce the risk of shark attack bites, it's important to possess adequate swimming skills and be aware of surf conditions before entering the water, officials said.
