Millions in the Central US brace for flash flood threat spanning 700+ miles amid relentless tropical downpours

Millions of Americans across the Central and Southern U.S. continue to brace for repeated rounds of tropical downpours through the end of the workweek.

A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood threat spans 700 miles across the central region, with the National Weather Service upgrading portions of Missouri and Kansas to a Level 3 threat Thursday morning.

7 FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FLASH FLOODS

The risk, which began on Wednesday, brought the risk of flash flooding, which continued due to heavy rain across parts of southwestern Oklahoma, where over 3 inches fell in just over an hour.

On Thursday, the active pattern remains as numerous shots of storms will move through the Central and Southern Plains into the afternoon.

A potentially significant heavy rain threat will set up between Kansas and northern Oklahoma over into Missouri.

Due to the increased possibility, an upgraded Level 3 out of 4 flash flood threat has been issued.

ROCKIES IN CROSSHAIRS AS ANOTHER DAY OF SEVERE STORMS FIRE UP, THREATENING DAMAGING WINDS, LARGE HAIL

As a stationary front remains draped over southern Kansas and Missouri, increased moisture pooling along the boundary will allow heavy downpours and thunderstorms to develop along and ahead of it.

Storms will move eastward along this front by late afternoon, allowing for rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Through early Friday, widespread rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected from Kansas into Missouri and southern Indiana, with localized pockets topping 3-plus inches.

As the day progresses, the main flood threat will shift further eastward into the Ohio Valley.

ANOTHER ROUND OF RAIN TO SPREAD ACROSS THE NORTHEAST THROUGH THE WEEKEND

Despite the persistent wet weather, it is a welcome gift, as many cities across the Central U.S. have experienced extreme drought, such as parts of Arkansas.
