Tsunami Threat issued across Central America after massive magnitude 7.7 earthquake batters Panama
A massive magnitude 7.6 earthquake rattled southern Panama on Friday afternoon, triggering a tsunami threat.
The earthquake happened at 1:56 p.m. ET, about 6.2 miles west-southwest of Pitaloza Arriba, Panama.
It's the third-strongest earthquake of 2026, behind two magnitude 7.8 earthquakes. One on June 7 in the Philippines and another on Aug. 14 in Indonesia.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was felt all across Panama.
The Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami threat for Colombia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Panama and Guatemala.
There is no tsunami threat for the U.S.
The Tsunami Warning Center said waves between 3 and 9 feet are possible in Panama.
Ecuador has the potential to see waves up to 3 feet.
Other areas are forecast to see less than a foot of waves.
