Tropical Storm Trudy forms in Pacific, could rapidly intensify into powerful Category 4 hurricane

THE TAKEAWAY

Tropical Storm Trudy formed Tuesday in the Pacific as the strengthening El Niño climate pattern causes the basin to remain exceptionally active this season.

MAPPING HURRICANE ISAIAS' DEADLY PATH: HOW THE VIOLENT CATEGORY 2 STORM UNFOLDED ACROSS FLORIDA AND GULF COAST

Formerly designated Tropical Depression 21-E, Trudy currently has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and is located about 490 miles south of Mexico.

The storm is forecast to strengthen into a powerful Category 4 or stronger hurricane, potentially reaching maximum sustained winds of 140 mph later this week.

If it does, Trudy would become the ninth Category 4 and Category 5 hurricane of the 2026 season.

According to FOX Forecast Center, the system is becoming better organized, with thunderstorms wrapping around its center.

The storm is expected to strengthen steadily over the next few days, with rapid intensification possible as it moves over very warm waters and encounters favorable atmospheric conditions.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HURRICANE MAKING A DIRECT HIT AND LANDFALL?

Trudy is forecast to move northwest before turning more toward the north-northwest. The storm could approach the coast of southwestern or west-central Mexico as a powerful hurricane.

Some forecast models indicate a possible landfall, although confidence in the storm's exact track remains low.

Increasing wind shear and interaction with land could eventually weaken the system, but Trudy is still expected to become a powerful hurricane.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Simon is impacting Mexico's southwestern coast, bringing torrential, terrain-enhanced rainfall that could reach 30 inches in parts of Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco.

Simon is a Category 1 hurricane and is expected to continue producing heavy rainfall, raising the risk of life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides. Large swells along the coast could also produce dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, Simon has slowed and stalled near the coast as several atmospheric features influence its future track.

A ridge of high pressure over the southeastern U.S., combined with a trough over the western U.S., is helping steer the system toward the northeast.

Meanwhile, a high-pressure system building to the west of Simon is expected to create a blocking pattern that could stall the storm and steer it toward the northwest.

This shift could allow Simon to strengthen slightly before its eventual track changes again.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TROPICAL DEPRESSION, TROPICAL STORM AND HURRICANE?

As the ridge breaks down and the trough moves east, Simon could turn back toward the northeast before potentially making landfall along the coast of the Mexican state of Sinaloa late Friday into Saturday morning.

However, the forecast remains uncertain, and Simon could lose its tropical characteristics as it approaches land.

For now, residents along Mexico's Pacific coast should closely monitor forecast updates.

With Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Trudy, the 2026 Eastern Pacific hurricane season continues to produce powerful, long-lived storms.

'HISTORIC' EL NIÑO INCREASINGLY LIKELY, WITH 83% CHANCE OF BECOMING THE STRONGEST ON RECORD

The parade of intense systems has made the 2026 Eastern Pacific hurricane season the most energetic on record, showcasing the basin's exceptional activity this year.
