Summer bummer: Rain to impact millions in the Northeast right as official start to summer begins
If you were hoping for nice summer beach weather to start the season, you may have to wait a bit longer.
After a wet spring in the East, summer is starting off the same way. The season officially starts Sunday morning, and rain is back in the forecast Monday through midweek.
HOW HIGH PRESSURE AND LOW PRESSURE DRIVE THE WEATHER
Starting Sunday through Monday, the low pressure system and cold front responsible for severe weather in the Plains will track eastward, bringing heavy rain to the Midwest and Northeast.
This unseasonably rich airmass will bring rainfall totals surging near 2 inches — well above the average for mid-June.
Combined with a deep, tropical-like warm cloud layer, atmospheric conditions will be primed to dump heavy rainfall.
WHAT DOES 'TROPICAL MOISTURE' MEAN?
A Level 1 out of 4 flash flood risk is in place Monday into Tuesday morning across the interior Northeast and into New England.
Widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are likely from eastern Ohio through down east Maine. Some areas could see over 3 inches of rain where slower-moving training thunderstorms develop.
Training thunderstorms occur when a series of individual thunderstorms repeatedly pass over the same area.

Luckily, the heaviest rain will fall further north of the areas hit hard by flooding from Arthur's remnants, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
Because recent weeks have been relatively dry, the biggest hazard will be urban and poor-drainage flooding, threatening to snarl the Monday evening commute in major cities like New York City, Philadelphia and Boston.
Meanwhile, rapid rises are possible on smaller, flashy streams.
High pressure is expected to build back into the region by midweek, bringing a rapid return to seasonal, dry summer weather.
