Subtropical Storm Josephine forms in the Atlantic as it heads up East Coast

Subtropical Storm Josephine formed in the Atlantic on Thursday as the storm moves up the East Coast and toward Cape Cod.

The system, formerly known as Invest 93L, is moving over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, which helped it develop tropical characteristics as it gradually separates from a nearby frontal boundary.

The storm is expected to move north-northeast before turning northeast and accelerating away from the East Coast by Friday. It could briefly affect Atlantic Canada as it moves offshore.

Gusty winds are expected to spread across parts of the Northeast beginning Wednesday evening and continuing into Thursday.

Long Island and eastern Massachusetts could see wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph, while Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard could experience gusts exceeding 50 mph on Thursday.

Showers are also possible across Cape Cod and Rhode Island, although rainfall totals are expected to remain low. Wind and rain are forecast to subside by this weekend.

According to FOX Forecast Center, Josephine will cause coastal flooding in parts of the East Coast. For most areas outside the Chesapeake Bay, Wednesday afternoon’s high tide is expected to be the last period with coastal flooding.

However, moderate coastal flooding could persist in parts of the Chesapeake Bay into Thursday or early Friday.
