See It: Massive wave crashes over condo in Hawaii amid powerful swells, stripping shingles from the roof
KEAUHOU, Hawaii — A towering wave driven by powerful south swells surged over the oceanfront condos at the Keauhou-Kona Surf and Racquet Club on Sunday, tearing shingles from the roof as people nearby watched in awe.
The National Weather Service (NWS) had initially issued a High Surf Advisory, which was later upgraded to a High Surf Warning as large waves began washing over shorelines.
Officials warned that a dangerous combination of a south-southwest swell and seasonal King Tides would trigger strong currents and dangerously large breaking waves of 10 to 15 feet.
Video captured from the scene reveals the roof shingles being violently stripped away by the force of the water.
In the footage, onlookers can be heard shouting in shock and anticipation as the massive wave crashes down over the complex and pours off the roof.
