Moisture from Rachel's remnants enhances storms blasting Upstate New York, New England
THE TAKEAWAY
Moisture from the remnants of Rachel, which battered Southern California over the weekend, is being carried over 3,000 miles high in the atmosphere, along a large dip in the jet stream, and is enhancing storms that are blasting parts of Upstate New York and New England Tuesday.
EYE OF THE SEASON: THE MOST NOTABLE ATLANTIC HURRICANES DURING EL NIÑO YEARS
Parts of Western and Central New York could see severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts and a few isolated tornadoes.
Those areas, as well as parts of New England, particularly the northern portions of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, could see up to 2 inches of rain through Wednesday morning. This includes the Burlington metro area.
A fast-moving storm will move out of the Great Lakes Tuesday and will tap into the moisture from Rachel's remnants, producing periods of heavy rain.
E DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HURRICANE MAKING A DIRECT HIT AND LANDFALL?
Persistent cloud cover could limit whether the region sees any severe storms. If the clouds break enough to allow daytime heating, a few stronger storms could form over the Interstate 90 corridor from just west of Buffalo to Utica.
"Getting Pacific moisture into New England is not unheard of, but this has tropical origins making it unique," the FOX Forecast Center said.
A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for San Diego on Friday for just the second time in its history as then-Tropical Storm Rachel threatened landfall.
Photos across parts of Southern California show the flooding caused by moisture associated with Rachel over the weekend as water pooled across roads and beaches, and rough surf slammed into beachfront homes.
The remnants of Rachel made landfall in Mexico just south of the U.S. early on Sunday.
Heavy rain from Rachel's post-tropical remnants quickly spread across southern California and up into southern Nevada, including Las Vegas on Sunday.
