Missing 5-year-old boy found dead following devastating flash floods in Ohio

LEWISVILLE, Ohio - After an extensive search, a 5-year-old missing boy was found dead over the weekend following recent flash flooding in the Lewisville community.

Around 7:14 p.m. on Sunday, the Monroe County Dispatch got a report of a missing 5-year-old boy in the community, and search efforts began immediately, according to authorities. 

It was a multi-agency, coordinated search conducted by deputies, firefighters and members of the Lewisville community.

Following the search, the missing boy was found in a creek drainage area near State Route 78, the Monroe County Ohio Sheriff's Office said.

Recently, the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic have been grappling with flash flood threats, including Ohio. 

Lewisville was among the local communities placed under a Flash Flood Warning on Sunday afternoon as torrential rains hammered the county.

Slow-moving storms have repeatedly slammed the same areas, compounding the threat with already-saturated soils.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has extended its deepest sympathy and condolences to the boy's family and loved ones, while asking the public "to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers and to respect their privacy as they grieve this tragic loss."

At this time, the incident remains under investigation and "no additional information is being released."
