Magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes off southern Philippines near site of June 8 major quake

GENERAL SANTOS, Philippines — A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck just off the southern coast of Mindanao, the largest island in the southern Philippines, around 7:30 p.m. local time Friday.

The quake struck in the same region as a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on June 8 that killed at least 61 people and follows major earthquakes in Venezuela and Japan earlier this week.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was about 22 miles south of Balangonan, Philippines, at a depth of 33 miles. The quake was felt in General Santos, one of the largest cities in the southern Philippines.

There was no immediate word on the extent of any damage or injuries.

The Philippines is one of the most seismically active countries in the world due to its location on the active Pacific Ring of Fire — the massive, 25,000-mile ring of volcanoes and tectonic plate boundaries where 90 percent of the world's earthquakes occur.
